Niletu is an app and website that help people contribute toward shared goals with family, friends and groups. This policy explains, in plain language, what information we collect and what we do with it. It applies to the app, the website, and contributions made with a Goal ID.
We collect what we need to run the service: your name and phone number when you register; the goals you create and the contributions you make; payment details needed to move money through providers like M-Pesa, Airtel Money, Mixx by Yas, CRDB, NMB and NBC; and basic device information that helps us keep your account secure.
If you choose to, you can also share your contacts so we can help you find people you know on Niletu, see "Your contacts" below. We never read your messages outside Niletu.
To help you find people you know who are already on Niletu and invite others, Niletu can sync your contacts. With your consent, the app uploads the names and phone numbers from your device's address book to our servers. We ask for this consent before any contact is uploaded, and you can say no, the rest of Niletu works without it.
Once uploaded, we use your contacts only to match them against other Niletu members, so we can show you which of your contacts already use Niletu and let you invite the ones who don't. We do not sell your contacts, use them for advertising, or use them for anything else. You can turn off contact sync and ask us to delete the contacts we hold at any time, in the app or by writing to us.
We use your information to operate goals and groups, process contributions and withdrawals, show members the transparent records Niletu is built on, send you updates you have asked for, and meet our legal obligations as a financial service. We do not sell your information to anyone.
Inside a goal, your name and contributions are visible to its members, that transparency is the heart of the product. Outside a goal, we share information only with the payment providers who move your money, with service providers who help us run Niletu under strict agreements, and with authorities when the law requires it.
Funds are held with regulated partner institutions. Your account is protected by your phone number and PIN, money movements require confirmation, and our systems encrypt data in transit and at rest. If we ever discover a breach that affects you, we will tell you promptly and plainly.
You can see and update your details in the app, contribute privately so only the goal owner sees your name, turn notifications on or off, and ask us for a copy of your data, or its deletion, at any time. Some records must be kept for a period by law, and we will tell you which when you ask.
